The Story & Dream

A sanctuary for the world’s short fiction.

by Jason Frye · Creator of Inklog

Short stories have always held a distinct kind of magic. In four or five thousand words, a master storyteller can disorient you, reconstruct your perception of grief or wonder, and leave you staring at the ceiling at two in the morning. They are literature’s test kitchen and daring frontier—a place where writers take stylistic and emotional risks that rare 400-page novels ever attempt.

Yet for generations, short fiction has suffered from a quiet injustice: it lives scattered. Extraordinary stories appear in quarterlies, independent reviews, campus journals, audio magazines, and fleeting paperbacks—from The Paris Review and Clarkesworld to One Story and small literary presses. Once read, they vanish into stack heaps or slip from memory. Readers have had Goodreads for novels and Letterboxd for cinema, but never a dedicated home crafted specifically for short fiction.

Inklog was born from a simple belief: short stories deserve the same reverence, archival care, and reader community as any full-length novel.

The Dream of Inklog

I built Inklog to be a warm, antique sanctuary for readers who cherish the craft of short prose. It is designed to feel like stepping into a private wood-paneled library with sunlight filtering through leaded glass. Here, you can track every story you read, log ratings and reflections, explore journal archives from 1953 to tomorrow morning, discover stories by emotional weight and narrative pacing, and share the joy of reading with fellow literature lovers.

We are indexing both contemporary online journals and historic print periodicals, preserving story openings, author connections, and issue lineage. This is only the beginning of what Inklog will become.
